Overview

The University of Miami's Lakeside Village residential housing facility received a LEED Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council in recognition of its energy efficiency and efforts to minimize environmental impact.

The Office of Sustainability at the University of Miami wanted to showcase the different characteristics of Lakeside Village that contributed to its Gold LEED certification to students and the wider community.

Research

To ensure that the interactive mixed reality tour of Lakeside Village was effective in showcasing the building's sustainability features, a thorough UX research and design process was followed.

First, a needs assessment was conducted to understand the target audience and their goals in using the application. This included researching the types of information and features that would be most valuable to users and how they would prefer to access and interact with this information.

Problem Statement

Currently, there is no engaging method to showcase the sustainable elements of Lakeside Village at the University of Miami.

Proposed Solution

To engage users by creating an immersive mixed reality experience that allows users to explore Lakeside Village through interactive
360 photography.

User Flow

We want users to intuitively navigate the space. To do this, we needed to have very clear steps for each image defined from early on.

Low fidelity wireframes

I created some very simple sketches for what the homepage would look like. I wanted to create a minimal and streamlined homepage to minimize confusion.

User testing

Finally, user testing was conducted to gather feedback on the application and identify any areas for improvement. I conducted interviews with 6 users. This included asking users to complete tasks within the application and providing feedback on their experience.

Overall, the UX research and design process for the interactive mixed reality tour of Lakeside Village at the University of Miami helped to ensure that the application was user-friendly, engaging, and effective in showcasing the building's sustainability features.

Results & Prototypes

360 images

I took 360 photographs of Lakeside Village's LEED certification elements. Once I had the photos, I could start mapping out the different interactions within each space.

Using Adobe XD, I overlayed the details from each image to describe each feature's specifics.

The design of the application was matched to the sleek and professional look of the University of Miami website.

Learning outcomes

The interactive application allowed users to learn about the different characteristics of Lakeside Village that contributed to its LEED Gold Certification in an engaging and interactive way.

  1. The application was seamlessly integrated into the Office of Sustainability's website, making it easily accessible for visitors interested in learning more about the University of Miami's sustainability efforts.

  2. By showcasing the impressive LEED certification elements of Lakeside Village, the application helped to educate students and the community on the importance of sustainability in building design.
